During his lifetime the critics used to call the Grand Messe with the Symphonie Triumphale,Architectonic music, due to the enormous forces that were to participate for the performances.The execution of his music was described best by himself :T
hey require extreme precision combined with irresistible verve, a controlled fire, a dreamlike sensitivity, and an almost morbid melancholy; without these the main features of my works are betrayed or completely obliterated.
The price agreed for the commision was 3.000 frangs. The performance took place and the money never arrived. Frustrated the fiery Berlioz rushes in the minister`s office,to find out that his fee was delayed due to ..beaurocracy.In order to calm him down the Minister announces to him that he is proposed gor a Cross. DAMN YOUR CROSS.I WANT MY MONEY. This was the answear of Berlioz.Instantly with the fear of a scandal the minister turned on with a check of 10.000 frangs!!!!At last the worried Hector calmed down.One of the milestones in music, may be the Grandiose Requiem of all times , had been payed. With today`s standards no fee would do justice to such a musical work. Berlioz was married to Harriett Smithson at that time and we(personal opinion) do strongly believe that the MASS was a fruit of his love for her.
