MAHLER SYMPH.NO 2 THE RESURRECTION PART I FUNERAL MARCH
.
Note the tremoli of the violins in the intro,it reminds the Valkure.Mahler never really made it to get away from the Master`s influence, his music being often compared to Wagners.
THE FUNERAL MARCH begins this raugh and violent introduction in a mood of threnody and anger!!! Many interpretations handle this piece in a fast tempo, something that makes me angered. I remember listening to the Mitropoulos one which is majestic but a bit fast. The best thing one can do is to listen to the Klemperer and Walter approach, because both were so close to Mahler and had straight relation with the second symphony. But again after so many years from Mahler`s death, i think both being very stuborn and absolute, gave their personal view on the piece. My favorite is the Bernstein reading on this memorable video from the legendary performance in London.
