MAHLER SYMPH.NO 2 THE RESURRECTION PART I FUNERAL MARCH

. Note the tremoli of the violins in the intro,it reminds the Valkure.Mahler never really made it to get away from the Master`s influence, his music being often compared to Wagners. THE FUNERAL MARCH begins this raugh and violent introduction in a mood of threnody and anger!!! Many interpretations handle this piece in a fast tempo, something that makes me angered. I remember listening to the Mitropoulos one which is majestic but a bit fast. The best thing one can do is to listen to the Klemperer and Walter approach, because both were so close to Mahler and had straight relation with the second symphony. But again after so many years from Mahler`s death, i think both being very stuborn and absolute, gave their personal view on the piece. My favorite is the Bernstein reading on this memorable video from the legendary performance in London.

AUFERSTEH`N RISE AGAIN

Aufersteh'n, ja aufersteh'n
Wirst du, Mein Staub,
Nach kurzer Ruh'!
Unsterblich Leben! Unsterblich Leben
wird der dich rief dir geben!
Wieder aufzublüh'n wirst du gesät!
Der Herr der Ernte geht
und sammelt Garben
uns ein, die starben!
O glaube, mein Herz, o glaube:
Es geht dir nichts verloren!
Dein ist, ja dein, was du gesehnt!
Dein, was du geliebt,
Was du gestritten!
O glaube
Du wardst nicht umsonst geboren!
Hast nicht umsonst gelebt, gelitten!
Was entstanden ist
Das muß vergehen!
Was vergangen, auferstehen!
Hör' auf zu beben!
Bereite dich zu leben!
O Schmerz! Du Alldurchdringer!
Dir bin ich entrungen!
O Tod! Du Allbezwinger!
Nun bist du bezwungen!
Mit Flügeln, die ich mir errungen,
In heißem Liebesstreben,
Werd'ich entschweben
Zum Licht, zu dem kein Aug'gedrungen!
Mit Flügeln, die ich mir errungen
Werde ich entschweben.
Sterben werd'ich, um zu leben!
Aufersteh'n, ja aufersteh'n
wirst du, mein Herz, in einem Nu!
Was du geschlagen
zu Gott wird es dich tragen!
I
Rise again, yes, rise again,
Will you My dust,
After a brief rest!
Immortal life! Immortal life
Will He who called you, give you.
To bloom again were you sown!
The Lord of the harvest goes
And gathers in, like sheaves,
Us together, who died.
O believe, my heart, O believe:
Nothing to you is lost!
Yours is, yes yours, is what you desired
Yours, what you have loved
What you have fought for!
O believe,
You were not born for nothing!
Have not for nothing, lived, suffered!
What was created
Must perish,
What perished, rise again!
Cease from trembling!
Prepare yourself to live!
O Pain, You piercer of all things,
From you, I have been wrested!
O Death, You masterer of all things,
Now, are you conquered!
With wings which I have won for myself,
In love’s fierce striving,
I shall soar upwards
To the light which no eye has penetrated!
Its wing that I won is expanded,
and I fly up.
Die shall I in order to live.
Rise again, yes, rise again,
Will you, my heart, in an instant!
That for which you suffered,
To God will it lead you!

MAHLER HERMANN PREY Wenn mein Schatz Hochzeit macht

. Wenn mein Schatz Hochzeit macht (When My Sweetheart is Married) Wenn mein Schatz Hochzeit macht, Fröhliche Hochzeit macht, Hab' ich meinen traurigen Tag! An mein Leide! When my darling has her wedding-day, her joyous wedding-day, I will have my day of mourning! I will go to my little room, my dark little room, and weep, weep for my darling, for my dear darling! Blue flower! Do not wither! Sweet little bird you sing on the green heath! Alas, how can the world be so fair? Chirp! Chirp! Do not sing; do not bloom! Spring is over. All singing must now be done. At night when I go to sleep, I think of my sorrow, of my sorrow!

MAHLER DIETRICH FISCER DISCAU LIEDER EINES FAHRENDEN GESSELLEN

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, baritone NHK Symphony, Paul Kletzki, conductor Filmed at Salle Pleyel, Paris, 24 October 1960
walked across the fields this morning; dew still hung on every blade of grass. The merry finch spoke to me: "Hey! Isn't it? Good morning! Isn't it? You! Isn't it becoming a fine world? Chirp! Chirp! Fair and sharp! How the world delights me!" Also, the bluebells in the field merrily with good spirits tolled out to me with bells(ding, ding) their morning greeting: "Isn't it becoming a fine world? Ding, ding! Fair thing! How the world delights me!" And then, in the sunshine, the world suddenly began to glitter; everything gained sound and color in the sunshine! Flower and bird, great and small! "Good day, Is it not a fine world? Hey, isn't it? A fair world?" Now will my happiness also begin? No, no - the happiness I mean
can never bloom!
