The Berlioz Requiem op.5 is a work of a commission from the French Government. The master always wanted to compose a work of gigantic forces and dimentions,so he was really happy for it..It was intented to remind the dead heroes of the 1830 Revolution..
Discussions and preparations took place, beaurocratic delays, until the master was authorized by the French interior Ministry to proceed to the composition..The year was 1837.The text of the work is the Mass o the Catholic Church. As Berlioz revised this work many times(another two at least) it remains one of his favorite compositions, and as he said if one was to destroy all his work but keep only one, this would be his Grand Messe.
