NASA GOES TO MARS WITH A ...GREEK SONG

June 28. 2001 This was a hot very hot night in Athens Greece.A huge crowd of people collected near the Temple of Jupiter were watching the concert from big tv walls.Video walls were also inside the Athens Olympic Stadium. The lucky ones to have a ticket were about to watch one very rare event. The concert of Vangelis which was premiered in Athens again in 1993,this time live. The concert was broadcasted live to many countries.Together with Vangelis JESSYE NORMAN and CATHLEEN BATTLE sung in the MYTHODEA. The artistic concept was magnificent the choruses were very good, together with the Orchestra.Ancient lyrics together with electronic music were married into a celebration for the exploration of the universe.Though the initial theme on movement 1 is deeply influenced by THE PLANETS OF GUSTAV HOLST,it remains a majestic glorious piece of music enriched with choruses and a large amount of cymbals. The whole work has big dimentions and the solists also participate in many movements. The lyrics are based on few GREEK words, not really connected between them but having their.own meaning. One hint on the lack of attention for works like this is the complete absence of any trace of post-modernism in Vangelis’ work and his views on it. For example claiming that powerful melodic Romantic pieces like Mythodea are somehow expressions of his inner or “cosmic” self (however true that may be in itself), without admitting to any influence whatsoever, past or present, tends not to be taken very seriously nowadays, rightly or wrongly.
