A BALLET HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE PARIS VERSION BY VERDI.IT IS NOT THE FIRST TIME VERDI WROTE BALLET MUSIC FOR HIS OPERAS.
THIS TIME THE BALLET IS
THE FAMOUS PELEGRINA.
Verdi was accused for Wagnerian influences on this Opera.Despite the critisism the great Master prepared and revised this work many times.
Part of the opera dates back to 1866 and part of it 1883.
It is Verdi`s biggest work and it has never been performed in it`s entirety. It is true that
Claudio Abbado recorded the DON CARLOS AS FIRST RECORDING OF THE FINAL FIVE ACT VERSION IN THE ORIGINAL FRENCH.
This is a very interesting set of cd`s as one can listen the whole work plus the ballet.
However if you are lucky to find a copy in the vinyl edition, it will be much better than trying to read the huge leaflet in the cd edition. You need a magnifier as the letters are tiny. Then, this is a personal opinion, this digital recording is badly recorded as it is full of hollowing , confusing sounds. Mr Abbado`s reading gives a rather wooly sound, the orchestra plays a Karajan style, once low, once ear bursting. The choruses are heard far away, always covering the detail, which is mixed with reverberation. This is a deutche grammophon set and in it, you will hear Nicolai Ghiaurov singing the role of Grand Inquisitor, instead of the FILLIPPO in which he was magnificent. Whatever. If your eyesight is good, buy the set, it is very usefull and complete as regards all the various versions Verdi composed.
